The organization of the US Open, last Grand Slam tournament of the year, announced that it had decided to grant an invitation to Maria Sharapova.
Maria Sharapova will be able to make her return in Grand Slam at the US Open (August 28 – September 10). The Russian (30, 148th) received an invitation from the organizers of the tournament. She had been suspended 15 months for use of meldonium and her return to the circuit, this season, had been subject to controversy. The organizers of Roland-Garros had decided not to grant him a wild card, whereas those of Wimbledon had chosen to invite him to compete the qualifications (injured, she had declared forfeit).
